Art at No 10

In December 2008 Bronte Woodruff, an artist friend of ours offered to gather some paintings for us to fill the many walls at No 10 for our launch party - we were stunned and amazed when she arrived with 99 paintings and with no fuss hung them throughout the house.

We feel privileged and deeply grateful to Bronte and her fellow artists who have allowed us to hang their work. All of the pictures are for sale and we can arrange a view at any time. The next public exhibition will be in autumn 2010. Check out the May 2010 exhibition on our Facebook page

BRONTË WOODRUFF
A rural artist, drawing inspiration from the highly-charged Marches landscape, I prefer to work with natural materials, including Van Dyck crystals, pigments, charcoal, graphite, beeswax and seasalt for their resist and dispersal qualities, and exploring different papers; A stick and a wide flat brush are most liberating tools. My paintings are a distillation of observations, an attempt to evoke atmosphere, contour, colour, texture, and - importantly .. energy. Lifestudy enables me to approach other subjects with renewed vigour and a fresh eye.
Recent Exhibitions include: Spring 2008; Radnorshire Museum, Llandrindod Wells; May 2007. 2008, St Andrew’s Art Show, Presteigne; Green Stage Gallery, Bishops Frome; July 2008, Artist in Residence with English Choral Experience at Dore Abbey; h-Art Open Studios 2003 – 2009; Nov 2008 organised and showed in Help for Heroes, Lemore Manor; Dec 2008, January, April and December 2009, curated and exhibited in Art at No. 10, TheStruet, Brecon; Spring 2009, Blue-Ginger Gallery, Cradley; April – June 2009 Four Women from the Marches , Showborough House Garden Sculpture Exhibition, Twyning, Glos.; Sept 2009, Bevere Vivis Gallery, Worcester; h-Art Open Exhibition Sept 2009; Glasbury Visual Arts Exhibition November 2009; January – April 2010 ‘Treescapes’ 6-man show with Richard Bavin at Pontypool Museum, The Barker Gallery; February 2010 Art for Your Sake – Macmillan at The Colloquy; Art at No. 10, May 2010; Blue-Ginger, Spring 2010,; the Gallery, Bishop’s Castle, May 2010; The Applestore Gallery, Brockhampton, ‘Life as we know it’, May 2010; Showborough House, Twyning, April – June 2010.
In August I have been invited to show a group of life studies alongside the work of Richard Studer, Artistic Director of Opera Project, in The Granary, Lingen. I exhibit at the Palace Art Fest later this summer, followed by my 7th h-Art Open Studio, and also in the Discoed Art Show as part of Herefordshire Art Week. I have also been invited to show a collection of collages at The Haymakers Christmas Show in Hay on Wye.
Brontë’s paintings hang in many private collections in the UK, USA, Europe, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and the Far East.

Visitors are always welcome to view her work at home by appointment.

PETER HORROCKS

My work is characterised by a concern for abstraction, carefully constructed structures and a sensual handling of forms. Initial images are often drawn from landscape sources, but a variety of other concerns have influenced my work. These include natural forms, stones and rock formations and themes such as ‘Freedoms and Constraints’ and ‘Traces’. I like to work on a series of images at the same time and enjoy the way the works interact with each other - one work teaches me about the next. I usually work on a square format and the scale can be from as small as 150mm to up to1metre. Some works are presented in a triptych format where the interaction between the three pieces is a significant part of the work.

During the past few years I have been developing my use of drawing media in order to explore more fully the expressive qualities of mark making in my work. Not only do I use conventional graphite pencils, but also graphite powder, pure earth pigments and a variety of mark making tools, some to incise the paper or board to produce grooves into which pigment is rubbed, or blocks of graphite rubbed over to reveal a negative line.

Works entitled ‘Landmarks’ often use natural earth pigments from the place which inspired the work, as in the 2004/5 Tuscan series. I have also sourced a range of ochres from the Clearwell Caves in the Forest of Dean and they have inspired a series of works over the past few years. The series, inspired by my visit to Uluru, (Ayre’s Rock), respects the sacred site and Australian pigments were purchased from Sydney. I have also started using other additives to give a more textured feel to the soft board on which I work. Recent experimentation working on canvas develops this area of my work further.

Works on the theme of ‘Traces’ explores marks left behind in nature and their possible meaning. I am always more interested in small fragments of the landscape rather than the bigger picture.

Drawing for me is an act of discovery. The works themselves are marks I leave behind, and in that sense, are traces where I have been in the creative process.

HAZEL GWATKIN, LRPS

Hazel Gwatkin lives in the small village of New Radnor in Mid-Wales and is inspired by the beautiful countryside that surrounds her. Her photographs are taken locally on Kodak black & white infrared film, creating a mystical feel to what are already beautiful landscapes. By using an opaque filter over the lens of the camera, the infrared film captures light beyond the red end of the spectrum, enabling images to be recorded of what the naked eye cannot see and until the film is developed there is no way of knowing how the photographs will appear. The countryside in a lot of her photographs has remained unchanged for many years with its own memories of bygone days and the unique mystique that results from the infrared film represents the land’s own secrets from the past.

RAE HARRISON

Before taking early retirement in 1992 I worked as sociologist / lecturer, then as counsellor with overseas students at Birmingham University. I then studied Fine Art and Art History at Ludlow College, afterwards gaining a Higher National Certificate at Hereford College of Art.

For many years I have been interested in abstract art and my approach has involved moving towards different kinds and degrees of abstraction. The first results were mostly semi-abstract, but I am now enjoying the challenge of creating completely abstract paintings.

It is hard to describe how this works. Sometimes
it begins with a stored memory of abstract images, then experimenting with line, shape, tone, colour and texture. Or I may use one or more sections of previous work, enlarged and cropped perhaps to provide an interesting composition – a basic structure.

I have had a longstanding affection for the work of Ben Nicholson and Morandi.More recently I have been drawn to Lanyon and Soulages, admiring the different ways in which they struggled with the problems of structure and composition in abstract painting. Local artist Carolyn Blake as well as fellow artists in Abstract Edge have also provided inspiration and support.

My Paintings are essentially celebratory, an expression of empathy with the subject, a distillation of visual impression and inner feeling. Paradoxically while I aim for immediacy of expression, it can take numerous attempts, re-workings and revisions before I achieve it. Each piece of work is an adventure – though I have an idea of the possible outcome, there are no rules or formulas in the making process, so the resulting image may be totally different from the conception.
Since moving from Harrow, Middlesex, to a farm in Radnorshire, mid-Wales, my subject matter has become more pastoral, being influenced by the new surroundings; the landscape, animal life and cloudy Welsh skies.
Working from the model continues to be an integral part of my creativity; a grounding discipline informative to the development of composition and painting.
Drawing is central to my life as an artist. Perhaps my happiest moments are when I am drawing outdoors, trying to capture a certain light, clouds in a particular formation, or even a bird, animal or person that has by chance appeared in my field of vision. Then I feel at one with nature.
