Brecon

Local Welsh Food

Welsh food specialities include meat such as lamb (cig oen), beef (cig eidion) from local Welsh Black cattle, and pork (cig moch), much of which is organic or free range.

On a cold winter's day you might like to try a warming Welsh cawl, a thick soup made from vegetables and chunks of meat. Vegetarians are also catered for, with a whole range of delicious cheeses (caws), as well as the famous Glamorgan sausage (selsig Morgannwg) made from leeks, cheese, eggs and breadcrumbs and absolutely no meat! …And for afternoon tea, why not treat yourself to a traditional bara brith (literally 'speckled bread', a fruit loaf usually spread thinly with butter) or a couple of delicious Welsh cakes (cacen cymreig)?

In Brecon itself we have three butchers, a fishmonger and a fresh vegetable stall six days a week. There is a twice weekly market on Tuesdays and Fridays and a Farmer’s Market twice a month on a Saturday.

Across the region there are farm shops selling local meat and vegetables and small scale producers offering a good selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, such as fresh apple juice, homemade cider, beer from local breweries, wine from local vineyards and even Welsh whisky!

The number of food producers is rapidly expanding in Wales, where real pride is taken in the quality of locally grown ingredients. Look out for the True Taste/Gwir Flas label, managed by the Welsh Assembly Government and awarded to the best products, producers and restaurants in Wales.
